Barlow Boys Lacrosse Loses To St. Joseph In Class S Finals

By Matt LoGuercio

Brian Bacarella scored three goals Saturday, including the game-winner with just under five minutes remaining, as St. Joseph edged Barlow 6-5 in the CIAC Class S boys lacrosse state championship game at McMahon.

It was the second title in three years for the 12th-seedeed Cadets (12-8), who won their first state title in school history in 2009.

The only thing Saturday's thriller lacked was overtime. After three quarters of swapping goals,  the game was knotted at 4-4 and overtime looked like a strong possibility.

In the first quarter, St.Joseph used tenacious and physical defense to keep the  Falcons' offense off step and ineffective. The Cadets repeatedly checked the Barlow players, preventing the third-seeded Falcons  from lining up any quality shots.

St. Joseph scored three goals in the first quarter -  two within 10 seconds - to open a 3-0 lead.

Barlow (16-5) regrouped, turned up its physical play and dominated the second quarter.

Senior attackman Brain Sternberg seemed to will his two goals into the net after slicing and dicing through the Cadets' defense. When the half ended the teams were tied at 3.

In the third quarter, Barlow continued to carry the momentum, grabbing a 4-3 lead on Dominic Lee's goal with 7 1/2 minutes left in the period.

Barlow's Zach Upton was stellar in goal with 15 saves and  turned away all of  St. Joseph's third-quarter shots until Bacarella scored his second of the day with 55 seconds left in the period.

Barlow, which was seeking its first state title since 2002, tighten up in the fourth quarter.

However, a penalty call early in the period gave St.Joseph a one-minute power play, an eternity in a championship game. The Cadets capitalized on Mike Marini's goal with seven minutes  left. Barlow answered with the equalizer  90 seconds later.

The Falcons threatened in the final minutes, but they were turned away by St. Joseph goalkeeper Matt Mohr, who registered 17 saves.

St. Joseph Wins Division S Lacrosse Championship

NORWALK -- With Liam Rooney cutting toward the net, St. Joseph goalie Matt Mohr had a championship to preserve.

Mohr made the save on the Barlow sophomore's low shot with 15 seconds left in Saturday morning's Division S boys lacrosse final at Jack Casagrande Field, preserving the Cadets' 6-5 win and their second state title in three years.

"I was thinking he was probably going low. He dropped his hands," Mohr said. "I basically tried to track the ball as best I could and get a piece."

The Cadets cleared the ball, then mobbed Mohr.

"It feels amazing. I'm proud of everybody," said Mohr, a senior. "It was definitely nerve-wracking. I was a little queasy all game."

The 12th-seeded Cadets (12-8) led early, got sloppy in the second, but trailed only once at 4-3. Third-seeded Barlow (16-5) took that lead on Dominic Lee's goal 4:29 into the third.

"I knew it would be a tough game," Barlow coach John Distler said. "They deserved to be here. We did, too."

Both teams played some tough defense. Both Mohr and Barlow goalie Zach Upton made huge stops. Upton had six saves in a phenomenal third quarter alone.

"To be honest, sometimes, I was just speechless," Mohr said. "I thought he had a great game."

Brian Bacarella finally beat him to make it 4-4 in the last minute of the third quarter. The teams traded goals in the fourth before Bacarella took a feed from Pat Mulligan to the right of the net, made a quick move toward the cage and beat Upton up high for his third goal.

"What we were trying to do was create seams to pass through," said Bacarella, a junior. "I said, Pat, next play, I'm going to be flashing through. I'll get it right."

A strong defensive effort limited Barlow's chances, from both the defenders themselves and the defensive midfielders under defensive coach Brian Fried's lead.

St. Joseph led 3-0 after one, scoring the last two nine seconds apart thanks to Ryan Mulligan's faceoff win.

"It's the first time for these guys. St. Joe's has a little more experience the last few years," said Distler; the Cadets' hockey and lacrosse players, for instance, have played in six state finals in three years. "Our kids were a little nervous."

But Barlow took advantage of second-quarter mistakes. Thomas Samaritano scored after St. Joseph went offside. Brian Sternberg scored twice after that to tie it.

The Cadets rallied in the second half, as they did in the second season after a .500 regular season in the FCIAC. No lower seed has won a boys lacrosse title since at least 1998.

"For them to be seeded where they were seeded is ridiculous," Distler said. "I was just hoping they wouldn't be seeded in our bracket."

The Cadets beat No. 5 Weston, No. 4 Ledyard and No. 1 Somers.

"I tell you, we really ran through the whole class, and boy, did they run," coach Joe Izzo said.

"(The Cadets) can call themselves champs. There's nobody left."

Perfect Season Comes to an End

By Corey Hirth | Email the author | June 9, 2011

The Somers High School boys lacrosse team ended its magical run on Wednesday with a 15-6 loss in the semifinals of the Class S state tournament against St. Joseph at West Haven High School.

The loss was the first of the year for the Spartans.

Somers goalie, senior Dan Bell, had all he could handle while making twenty saves on the night with many coming from point blank opportunities. Bell held the Spartans in the game as long as he could but seven goals from the Cadets in the fourth quarter were just too much power for the Spartans' defense.

Zach Thresher played well for the Spartans' attack and played a role in five of the six goals for Somers. Thresher finished the game with three goals, the first three of the game for Somers, and two assists.

Neil Cardwell and Donny Whittle scored the other goals for the Spartans (17-1).

No. 12 St. Joseph (11-8) jumped out quickly on the top seeded Spartans taking a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. But the Spartans would not give up their undefeated streak that easily, and outscored the Cadets in the second quarter 3-1 to close the gap to a 5-4 St. Joseph lead at halftime.

With the second half up for grabs and a spot in the Class S State Championship game on the line, the Cadets took it upon themselves to take it to the Spartans. As the game got more physical, St. Joseph just got better.

In a low scoring but hard hitting third quarter, the Cadets got goals from Pat Mulligan, Pat Corcoran, and Brian Bacarella to widen the gap to 8-5 going into the fourth and final quarter.

With the game still in reach for Somers, the Cadets slammed the door on the Spartans when St. Joseph attacker Lance Hunt had a strong individual effort and sent a wicked shot into the upper corner of the net behind Bell to give the Cadets a 9-5 lead.

St. Joseph would never look back and continued on a nine straight goal streak before Somers finally scored their sixth goal from Tyler Russell.

Bacarella, Mike Marini and Tom Battaglia each had hat tricks for the Cadets.  Mulligan and Bob Ciotti both had two goals for St. Joseph while Peter Vallerie also added one.

The loss on Wednesday ends a special season for the Spartans in which they went undefeated for 17 straight games.

The Spartans have eleven seniors on the team that they will be saying goodbye to.

No Redemption for Colonels Lacrosse this Year

By BRETT POIRIER

Posted Jun 04, 2011 @ 10:44 PM

The 2010 Ledyard boys lacrosse team was two wins away from ending one of its best seasons in school history with a state title.

That is, until the top-seeded Colonels fell to fifth-seeded St. Joseph on June 8.

Almost a year later, Ledyard got another shot against the Cadets, but one of the Eastern Connecticut Conference’s best teams was overmatched by an aggressive squad on Saturday and upset in the Class S state tournament for the second straight year, 8-1.

Twelfth-seeded St. Joseph won the opening faceoff of the quarterfinal game, dominated time of possession in the first period and had already scored once and fired six shots on goal before the fourth-seeded Colonels took their first shot of the game 7 minutes, 12 seconds in.

Most of Ledyard’s possessions on the offensive end led to quick turnovers.

“We were a little bit overaggressive on offense and it led to turnovers and missed opportunities and then they got the ball back on offense,” Ledyard coach Brian Martin said.

“It was three or four minutes before we got another shot.”

With 3:58 remaining in the second period, Jonathan Schilke found Michael Delia in front of the net for Ledyard’s lone goal. The Colonels went into the half trailing, 3-1, and were outshot, 16-8.

St. Joseph found the back of the net four times in the third quarter. The Cadets dominated possession, not allowing Ledyard’s offense to touch the ball until there was 6:24 remaining in the period. They added one more goal in the fourth.

Mike Marini had a hat trick and assist to lead the team.

“The kids were patient with the ball. They weren’t overzealous. They dodged hard, made their looks and did a good job of just reading it and going,” St. Joseph coach Joe Izzo said. “The advantage of that is you’re taking the clock, too.

“The kids were really patient (Saturday), which was impressive. It impresses me because it is hard to take a high school kid and tell him to be patient.”

Ledyard seemed out of sync when it finally did get chances around the goal. Senior Connor Sweet said his young team didn’t attack the defense enough.

“I don’t think it was the passing as much as it was confidence,” Sweet said. “We didn’t necessarily go out there and try to score. We just dodged around the outside.”

Sweet said the Cadets weren’t the most physical team he played against this season, but St. Joseph made a number of tough, physical plays throughout the game and even collected their share of penalty time.

“They played very aggressive,” Martin said. “It’s not something we are used to seeing in the ECC. The ECC doesn’t play as aggressive as they do. There is no easy route to the goal. There is no easy pass. They make everything difficult and make you work for everything.”

Weston Dethroned As Class S Lacrosse State Champions!
By Matt LoGuercio | Email the author | June 2, 2011

The seesaw three-year battle between the St. Joseph and Weston boys lacrosse teams went the Cadets' way this season.

Pat Corcoran scored four goals Wednesday as St. Joseph dethroned the Trojans as CIAC Class S state champions with an 8-6 victory in Weston.

In 2009, St. Joseph defeated Weston 12-11 in the state final with the Trojans returning the favor last year, 7-6. The latest meeting between the rivals turned into another thriller.

St. Joseph (9-8)  started the scoring 1:19 in on a doorstep goal by Mike Marini. After four minutes of back and forth possession, Weston (11-7) strung together three goals in a two-minute span to mount what looked like an offensive juggernaut.

St. Joe’s defense, led by goalie Matt Mohr (14 saves), settled down and the two teams went to the half with Weston holding a 4-2 lead.

The second half started similar to the first quarter with St. Joseph's Pat Mulligan scoring at the 1:50 mark and Brian Bacarella tallying 22 seconds later to get the Cadets even.

St. Joseph was controlling the ball possession early on and began weaving in and out of the Weston defense to create scoring chances.

Corcoran took over the game, scoring twice in a 90-second span to put the Cadets up for good at 6-4. He added two more with his third goal at 8:52 of the fourth quarter proving to be the game winner

Richie Miller tallied twice for Weston and goalie Alex Peyreigne closed out his stellar high school career with 11 saves for the Trojans.
